NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Bahamas turned in a historic performance at the 2025 Youth Sailing World Championships.

More than 400 of the world’s top youth sailors from nearly 70 countries competed across Olympic-style classes last week in Vilamoura, Portugal.

Representing The Bahamas were top ILCA 6 sailors Eliza Denning and Norman Cartwright Jr., both competing for a second consecutive year on the world stage.

Denning finished 23rd out of 50 sailors, the best result ever by a Bahamian at this event and the top finisher among all Caribbean nations.

Denning, also a Junior Pan Am Games gold medalist, finished ahead of competitors from major sailing powerhouses including the United States, Great Britain, Canada and Mexico.

Cartwright placed 41st out of 57, finishing in the top half of Caribbean competitors.

Both sailors have a strong history of international success for The Bahamas, having previously won major regional and youth sailing titles, continuing the country’s proud tradition on the water.

Bahamas Sailing Association President Lori Lowe praised the team’s performance, citing their resilience in challenging open-ocean conditions and calling the results a major milestone for Bahamian sailing.

Bahamian Track Athletes Transfer to Power Five Programs

Bahamian athletes are making moves on the collegiate track and field scene with major transfers to Power Five programs.

Collinique Farrington is headed to the Texas Tech Red Raiders after a stellar run at Southwest Baptist University, where she emerged as one of NCAA Division II’s top sprinters.

Farrington captured the NCAA Division II national title in the 400 meters, clocking 51.63 seconds at the national championships in Pueblo, Colorado, and added a runner-up finish in the 200 meters with a personal best of 22.83 seconds.

She also earned five All-American honors, won multiple GLVC event titles, secured USTFCCCA Midwest Regional Athlete of the Year, and set numerous school records during her time with the Bearcats.

Thompson, a junior, has been a key contributor at Jacksonville University and is transferring to Auburn University to compete in the Southeastern Conference.

At Jacksonville, she posted a personal-best 400-meter time of 52.81 seconds.

She was also named ASUN Track Performer of the Week for her outstanding results during the season.

King and Moss Close College Hoops Stretch Before Break

In college hoops, Fred King and Brent Moss continued strong play heading into a brief break, with King leading Murray State’s winning run and Moss earning a start for Texas-San Antonio.

King and the Racers extended their winning streak to six games, overcoming a second-half deficit to defeat Valparaiso 85-79.

King finished with 19 points, five rebounds and four blocks, setting season highs with 8-of-13 shooting from the field in 32 minutes.

The Racers improved to 10-3 overall and 2-0 in Missouri Valley Conference play, claiming their first road win in MVC competition before the Christmas break.

In Texas, Brent Moss earned a start for the Texas-San Antonio Roadrunners, finishing with seven points and four rebounds in 28 minutes.

Despite his efforts, the Roadrunners fell 71-68 to Seattle.
