Denzel Daxon Named to Cowboys Practice Squad

DALLAS, TEXAS – After clearing waivers, Denzel Daxon is back with the Dallas Cowboys.

Daxon was named to the Cowboys practice squad and was granted a unique exemption through the NFL’s international pathway program.

The rookie defensive tackle, signed with the cowboys as an undrafted free agent in April.

He appeared in three preseason games and finished with seven tackles and a half sack.

Daxon has had an impressive showing in rookie minicamp and signed a three year $2.8 million dollar deal with the Cowboys.

The NFL announced the expansion of the practice squad for all 32 teams to include one international player.

Daxon is one of 28 players that have been granted the international player roster exemption so far.

The 6’2 325 pound defensive lineman completed his collegiate career with the Illinois Fighting Illini.

In his final season at Illinois he started 11 games at nose tackle and finished, with 27 tackles.

Track and Field

The season continued for quartermiler Wendell Miller on the world athletics continental tour.

Miller finished third in the 400m at the Grand Prix Lombardia – Brescia in Italy in a time of 45.97 seconds.

Miller finished third  finished behind former Olympic Champion Kirani James of Grenada in 44.86 seconds and Bayapo Ndori of Botswanna in 45.26 seconds.

Miller’s 2024 season has also included his first baas senior national title, which he won in 45.65 seconds.

He was also a member of The Bahamas’ mixed relay team at the Paris Olympics that finished eighth in heat one 13th overall in 3:14.58 seconds.

Basketball

Kentwan Smith was the final member of the senior men’s national team to sign with a club for the upcoming season – the veteran forward is headed to Cyprus.

Smith signed with Anorthosis Ammohostou of the Opap Basket League, the top-tier level of the Cypriot Basketball System.

He championship winner, along with the winners of the Cypriot Cup, will qualify to compete in the next season’s FIBA’s European-Wide Continental competitions.

The 32-year-old Smith spent last season in the Swedish Basketligan with BC Lulea where he averaged 12.2 points and 6.8 rebounds per game.

The 6’9″ Smith has also played professionally in eight countries and three continents. His other career stops have included Denmark, Finland, France, Mexico, Romania,, Slovakia, and Czech Republic.

At the national team level, Smith also represented Bahamas at the FIBA Olympic games qualifying tournament in Valencia, Spain this year. 

Beach Soccer

The Bahamas Women’s Beach Soccer Team completed a difficult run at the he 2024 FISU World University Beach Sports Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

They concluded competition with a 6-0 loss to Argentina to finish in fourth place

Team Bahamas opened with a 15-7 loss to el Salvador, followed by a 9-0 loss to Brazil, followed by a 3-1 loss to Argentina to complete the group stage.

In the semifinals, they lost 10-1 in their second matchup against Brazil.

Headed into the competition, The Bahamas women’s beach soccer team was ranked 12th by beach soccer worldwide.

Baseball

The playoff runs and the 2024 seasons came to an end for Chavez Young and D’shawn Knowles in the American Association of Professional Baseball.

Young’s lake country Dockhounds and Knowles’ Sioux City Explorers were both eliminated in the Miles Wolff Cup playoffs.

Young was traded to the Dockhounds late in the season and joined the team just in time for the first playoff series in franchise history.

They lost the best of three series to the Kane County Cougars in the East Division.

In the West Division, Knowles and the Explorers lost their three game series to the Fargo-Moorhead Redhawks.

Both players began their seasons in the minors at the Triple A and Double A levels, before they were released and signed to independent baseball.
