GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Some may say it is long overdue, but finally, it appears Grand Bahamians are closer than ever to getting a new international airport facility.

The Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Tourism making the announcement, Thursday, at the 20th Grand Bahama Business Outlook.

Aerodrome Limited, a Bahamian company, is in a joint partnership with Manchester Airport Group, an airport management group based in Manchester, and BHM Construction International. The group is expected to be financed by UK Export Finance UKEF.

Cooper said the three companies represent a joint venture consortium that successfully bid to design, build, finance, operate, maintain and develop the airport.

The redevelopment will happen in two phases, creating 1,200 jobs over the next five years. Ninety percent of those jobs will be reserved for Bahamians. Phase 1 is expected to be completed no later than quarter one of 2025.

Phase 2 commences two years after phase 1 wraps up.

Cooper said a full team will be on island on March 27 for further assessments and demolition of the old international terminal is expected to take place before the first week of April.
