NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Crime statistics released by the police commissioner last month show a 29% overall drop in reported domestic violence cases.

Police say incidents such as assault with a deadly weapon, threats of harm and threats of death have each seen near 50% declines.

In total, 1,859 domestic-related cases were reported in 2025, compared to 2,630 in 2024.

But Bahamas Crisis Centre Administrator Cleopatra Christie tells me she is still concerned about victims who may never report their abuse.

The issue is also being addressed at the government level.

Social Services Minister Myles Laroda telling reporters that one of government’s two domestic violence shelters, has now been completed. All part of a broader effort to support victims seeking help.

And for Anne Marie Davis, Spouse of the Prime Minister, the fight against domestic violence is far from over.
