DOMINICAN REPUBLIC – The Dominican Republic announces a major border development plan aimed at boosting trade, and curbing smuggling along the Haiti frontier.

President Luis Abinader recently tells congress that his government will establish a network of dry ports along the border – calling it the most important logistics project ever conceived for the region.

The project is backed by more than $300M in private investment, and will operate under a free trade zone regime.

Abinader saying the country has already built a border wall for security, and will now build what he describes as an economic wall to strengthen formal trade with Haiti, and disrupt smuggling networks.

A dry port is an inland logistics hub connected to seaports by road or rail, where cargo can be cleared through customs, stored, and distributed more efficiently.
