It’s something countless people around the world fall victim to, even right here in The Bahamas.

Director of Retail Banking and Small Business at Scotiabank, Na-Amah Barker, tells me there are several scams you should be aware of.

“Phishing refers to fake emails, smishing refers to fraudulent SMS text messages coming to your phone, and vishing refers to voice fraudulent scams all men to trick you into sharing sensitive information “

If you click any of these links, these scammers can take this information, drain your bank accounts instantly or worst, sell the info to other scammers.

Barker says there are measures in place to prevent this.

“Some of which include real-time alerts through our Scotia alerts, we recently completed a soft launch of Apple Pay and plan to expand more brightly in January. We also have a feature that allows clients to turn on and off that debit or credit cards. This tool is exceptionally important for clients, especially when the cards are not in use to help protect themselves “

But what can you do if you become a scam victim?

“Please ensure that you called Scotiabank, I’ll call your bank so that we can protect your account and investigate the incident stop monitor your account closely and also report the scam to local authorities”
