Downtown Worker: “When It Rains…It Floods”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – For those working downtown like Mojo’s Watersports & Tours employee Renee Major, the rain isn’t just an inconvenience, it’s a disruption that forces them to walk away from operating their business until the water clears.

“When it rains down here it floods, all the water drain down from the hill come down and all down here you does have to leave.”

Monique Sutherland, another downtown worker, says it’s a problem that’s lingered for decades.

Over at Charlotte and Bay Street, downtown worker Paul Thompson points out how he believes neglected drains leave sidewalks under water.

“As you can see presently right here, at Charlotte and Bay Street, we have flooding because the drains are not properly taken care of, so this results in the water now coming off the street and moving now onto the sidewalk where guests have to walk and its something that really needs to be taken care of. “

Then on Parliament Street, shopper Omar Johnson says flooding there has been a stubborn problem for years.

“Right on Parliament Street gotta big problem with water for years now that need to fix, yes please lord right there on Parliament Street. Right there!”

Meanwhile, straw vendor Shaniyah Smith describes how stalls are forced shut, while taxi driver Isaac Rolle explains how traffic grinds to a halt in flood‑prone areas.

“When it rains the water comes under the door and the door have to remain closed, and we have to remove the stuff…”

Isaac Rolle – Taxi Driver 

“A lot of times, that way still experiencing a lot of flooding going on in the East Bay Street area, but the direct downtown area, these type areas especially down there by Senior Frogs, that’s another flood prone area where you cannot pass, its impassable for traffic and for people walking.”
