NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Alicia Wallace, Director of Equality Bahamas, explains the danger of the language changes that have been placed in the Protection Against Violence Bill 2023.

She calls the new bill a “rollback” of the 2016 draft of the Gender-based Violence Bill and says we must be wary of simply “ticking boxes” when it comes to equality issues.

The prime minister recently expressed disappointment over what he felt was last-minute opposition to the new bill.

However, Wallace says the pushback has been ongoing, and shares part of the issue is the style of consultations.
