ETHIOPIA – Volcanic activity at Ethiopia’s long-dormant Hayli Gubbi Valcano has now subsided, days after a rare eruption covered villages in ash and disrupted international flight paths.

Officials in the Afar region say residents have been coughing and livestock can’t find clean water or grass, prompting mobile medical teams to be dispatched to remote communities.

The eruption forced airlines to cancel dozens of flights, including more than 11 Air India routes.

One geologist says this is the volcano’s first recorded eruption in 10,000 years.

High-level winds carried the ash cloud across the Red Sea toward India and China, with skies expected to clear late Tuesday.
