USA – Americans lost $5.6 billion to cryptocurrency scams in 2023, according to an FBI report Monday.

The report says scammers often build trust through online friendships before introducing fraudulent investment opportunities. Older adults, particularly those over 60, were the hardest hit, losing nearly $1.6 billion.

The FBI warns recovery is unlikely, and many victims don’t realize they’ve been scammed. Efforts are said to be underway to train law enforcement and banks to recognize warning signs and prevent further losses.
