NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It’s been months since the government tore down a shantytown – the last d-day happened in New Providence last November.

That’s when bulldozers tore down over one hundred structures in the T-wash shantytown on Cowpen Road but that’s set to change soon.

Works and Family Island Affairs Minister Clay Sweeting, says the bulldozers will be out again to tear down this small shantytown.

Last year, three unregulated communities  were demolished across the country turning tightly compacted communities into flat, clear acres of land.

The family islands were not exempt also flattened were 200 structures in Abaco and over 200 in Eleuthera.

And Sweeting says, they’re not done yet – 200 more eviction notices will be handed out.

During my visit to several shantyowns over the last year and a half – there’s been a similar complaint from residents.

Many of them Haitian migrants on work permits asking for more time saying it’s difficult to uproot their families and find somewhere affordable to stay but Sweeting says government has been more than lenient.
