FLORIDA – Florida has begun building a detention center, dubbed the “Alligator Alcatraz,” to temporarily hold immigrants on an airfield in the Everglades.

According to Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, the facility is being funded “in large part” by the Federal Emergency Management Agency’s Shelter and Services Program.

The facility, which will be built on the site of the Dade-Collier Training and Transition Airport, is expected to cost around $450 million per year to operate.

According to Florida’s Attorney General, James Uthmeier, the airport, located approximately 36 miles from Miami, will hold around 1,000 people and could be built in 30 to 60 days.
