NASSAU, BAHAMAS – As the Davis Administration lays another national budget for the upcoming fiscal year, Free National Movement (FNM) Chairman Dr. Duane Sands says the allocations are a clear sign that the Progressive Liberal Party (PLP) “just doesn’t get it.”

One of the key points of contention is the government’s decision to allocate $140,000 to the Freedom of Information Office in the 2025/2026 budget ,  the same figure as last year. The Organization for Responsible Governance has raised concerns over the stagnant allocation, while PLP Chairman Fred Mitchell responded by accusing the group of being overly critical.

Still, Sands remains adamant that the government does not believe in transparency.

Dr. Duane Sands – Chairman, Free National Movement
“That is why this administration has allocated hundreds of millions of dollars in no-bid contracts in order to reward the party faithful, and the rest of the Bahamian public… well, we conch. So freedom of information will continue to languish under this administration.”

While acknowledging that the former Minnis administration made little movement on the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA), Sands made a firm commitment for the future.

Dr. Duane Sands – Chairman, Free National Movement
“You could take this to your Jesus. A Michael Pintard-led administration will ensure that the freedom of information comes to light if we are successful in the next general election, okay? And you could quote me on that.”

Sands also criticized the government’s $10 million allocation this fiscal year toward the construction of a new Parliament building ,  part of a project that is projected to cost $65 million in total.

When asked about the spending, Sands did not hold back.

Dr. Duane Sands – Chairman, Free National Movement
“There is a level of contempt for the Bahamian electorate and the Bahamian people in general. As far as this administration is concerned, the House of Assembly is purely a means to an end,  for them to continue to do as they see fit. So when the chairman says they aren’t on their run as it relates to freedom of information, believe him. They do not believe that Bahamians ought to know. Let’s keep them entertained, let’s keep them fed, let’s keep them watered. It’s all about power.”
