FNM Chairman: “The Convention Could Be in the Coming Months, the Council Can Adjust the Date”

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Free National Movement won just eight seats in the 2026 General Election.

Many in the public are speculating as to when the next convention will be held.

Previous reports suggested one wouldn’t be held until late next year, a move many consider to be out of the norm following such a crushing defeat.

On Thursday, Free National Movement Chairman Dr. Duane Sands was grilled by On The Record host Jerome Sawyer, who was asked when he thinks the convention should’ve been.

“If you ask me whether the decision, initial decision to have convention pushback as far as October 2027 is a reasonable idea in my opinion, no it is not, because I think it’s far too long and already I think the party is moving to adjust…”

It was at the party’s last convention in 2024, where Pintard was declared leader, and it will be at the next one where his fate will be decided.

Many are speculating that Pintard would be ousted, especially after former party leader Hubert Ingraham told supporters at a recent event, that the FNM needs a leader who can help them win – despite Ingraham publicly endorsing Pintard during the 2026 General Election campaign trail.

Pintard described Ingraham’s comments as not appropriate.

“At the time that he gave that endorsement, I believe that he fully had confidence in Michael Pintard and the team going into the general election, and I think probably fully expected that we would do better in the election than we did...”

Pintard insists he will let the leadership decision be settled when convention is held, after many questioned why he didn’t step down as party leader after the election.

So does Dr. Sands believe Pintard can lead the party to a victory in the next election?

“Can he? Yes he can. Should he? That’s a different question,” Sands said.
