NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The FNM is on the defense after a former politician called their commercial banking proposal foolish, but Michael Pintard is suggesting he read the proposal before criticizing it. Berthony McDermott has the details.

Days after Arawak Homes chairman Sir Franklyn Wilson criticized the FNM’s commercial banking proposal as foolish, FNM Leader Michael Pintard is hitting back saying his comments wreaked of entitlement.

Wilson told a local daily this week there is no need to reform the country’s commercial banking sector,, adding it makes no sense for any leader of the Official Opposition to promise that he will change the policies of the Canadian bank which operates in The Bahamas.

But Pintard suggested Wilson should first read the proposal.

Sir Wilson suggested local leaders should instead propose that Canadian banks that operate here agree to accept the same terms that they have in Barbados.

In February, Barbados introduced a new law that was meant to curb rising bank fees.

Pintard’s comments came hours after he met with Central Bank Governor John Rolle Wednesday. He says the meeting revealed the FNM is on the right track.
