FNM Leader: What Is The Government So Afraid Of?

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Opposition Leader Michael Pintard once again blasting government for what he calls a lack of transparency into a number of matters on the mind’s of Bahamians.

With a number of probes into matters such as alleged police corruption and the ruling in New York that saw over $1.6 billion in damages awarded to Baha Mar developer Sarkis Izmirlian, Pintard says he believes government not seeing the need to hold public inquiries speaks to what they fear may come out of these investigations.

With mounting pressure from residents around the country for answers into these matters, Pintard has this question.

“What is the government afraid of,” he asked.

“Clearly the public trust has been diminished in the political directorate. So what we want to do is broaden the amount of voices that can weigh in on what we must do to fix the gaps to fix any perceived corruption in our system. That requires independent adjudicators more voices from civil society, the business community and otherwise, the government is afraid to face that kind of scrutiny.”

PLP Chairman Fred Mitchell has been on record against any such inquiries.

The opposition leader says not only is Mitchell’s back and forth in the media unprofessional, but often contradicts the views of Prime Minster Philip Davis, adding confusion to matters taxpayers are concerned about.
