NASSAU, BAHAMAS – 300,000 pounds of waste is generated in The Bahamas each year, do you know how much New providence alone creates?

The Bahamas has a trash situation that’s growing at the New Providence Ecology Park, formerly known as “the dump”.

John Thomas, a senior at The University of The Bahamas, works with the New Providence Ecology Park, and says he’s studying to be a professional garbage man.

That means taking a critical look at where the country’s trash ends up.

While a landfill may put most trash out of sight, Thomas explains it has other negative impacts that may affect our health in the long run.

Where does that leave The Bahamas now?

Well, Thomas says small steps can cut the amount of trash that lands in the landfill.

Currently, he says 20% of waste coming to the ecology park is composted, providing nutrient rich material that can boost soil and crop production.
