NASSAU , BAHAMAS –
Julie Blanchard – Spouse of the U.S. Ambassador
“Now, who picks out the pieces for the home? I am that person. I try to make sure that we both love it.”
The spouse of U.S. Ambassador to The Bahamas Julie Blanchard jokingly told us who curates their art collection at home.
She was among the distinguished guests invited to the Fuze VIP welcome reception Wednesday evening.
The art exhibition is on display in a temporary gallery at the festival, celebrating the work of more than 100 artists from around the world.
Under the theme “Coming Home,” U.S. Ambassador Herschel Walker says the event is a testament to the fact that The Bahamas is more than a tourist destination.

“So this is why this is such a great, great show, so that people can get out to see that The Bahamas is not just a beach or resort where people go to have fun, but they have a culture here that is absolutely incredible.”
It’s a sentiment shared by Minister of Culture, Arts and Heritage Leslie Miller-Brice.

“You know, we always talk about sun, sand and sea, but it now needs to be sun, sand, sea and art. Our country is blossoming with amazing artists and amazing creatives.”
The artistic excellence extended beyond the exhibition booths, as the resort’s culinary professionals delivered an impressive performance as well.
Gourmet delicacies, including nitrogen-infused champagne sorbet and chilled lobster salad garnished with sturgeon caviar, captivated guests.
Diplomats, corporate leaders and art collectors marvelled at the striking displays of visual and live art.
Among the enthusiastic family members in attendance was Maureen Webber, who travelled from Jamaica to surprise her daughter, Anika, an exhibitor at the fair.

“Did she see you yet? No, she hasn’t seen me yet. Where is she? I don’t know where she is. We’re walking with you. We’re going on this surprise with you.”
That was not the only surprise of the night.
The Central Bank of The Bahamas unveiled a shrine dedicated to renowned trumpeter Giveton Gelin.
The local musician has been described by Grammy Award-winning performer Jon Batiste as a musical genius.
Following the installation, Gelin expressed his gratitude, acknowledging both the honour of being featured and the privilege of being in a room with so many talented artists.

“I think we have more of a collective power than just a singular thing. Just, for example, this entire project is called ‘Island Dreamer.’ I think about all the people that are in this room.”
