HAITI – Garry Conille arrived in Haiti on Saturday to assume his new role as Prime Minister.

Conille was named by a transitional council aiming to facilitate upcoming elections, replacing interim Prime Minister Michel Patrick Boisvert. Upon arrival in Port-Au-Prince, Conille met with Boisvert, according to a government statement.

Conille, who has served as UNICEF’s regional director for Latin America and the Caribbean since January 2023, previously held the position of Haiti’s Prime Minister from October 2011 to May 2012 under President Michel Martelly.

As Conille takes office, Haiti continues to grapple with escalating gang violence in its capital and other areas.

The country is also awaiting the U.N.-backed deployment of a police force from Kenya and other nations to help restore order.
