JAMAICA – A proposed new gender policy is getting mixed reaction, some not so favorable.

The Jamaica Gleaners reporting the new policy will require everyone attached to UWI be referred to by the gender with which they identify.

According to UWI’s website, in May 2018, a gender policy was launched, formalizing the university’s commitment to gender justice and establishing a framework for its implementation.

The document was revised last year 2022.

The policy is described as “a framework to guide the creation of a supportive environment for all persons, inclusive of gender identities and sexual orientations, in all aspects of university life.”
