NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Knowing your status is key in the fight against HIV, but in order to know your status you have to get tested and that’s where the National Reference Lab comes in.

The National Reference Lab is a public health lab focusing on molecular diagnostics.

When it comes to HIV/AIDS, Lab Director Dr. Indira Martin says they offer rapid HIV testing.

She says if the results come back positive, it’s not a diagnosis that people like to hear.

The good news is all of the care services and medication is free of charge.

When it comes to confidentiality and the accuracy of the results, Dr. Martin says patients have nothing to worry about.

She says if you are sexually active, you should get tested every six months, as well as practice safe sex.
