NASSAU, BAHAMAS – It was all smiles and hugs outside government schools across New Providence Monday morning as students eagerly returned to the classroom.

Education officials made rounds observing the process and working to correct minor issues, but parents report a smooth start to the school year.

Education Minister Glenys Hanna-Martin visited several campuses in the capital, welcoming students and noting areas for refinement.

GLENYS HANNA-MARTIN – MINISTER, EDUCATION
“I’m making notes and we’re going to come back and refine to create as close to perfection as we would like to see, but I’m very hopeful because these children are the true hope of this nation and what we do on these campuses and the individuals offering instruction and mentorship will mean a big difference in what we see in The Bahamas.”

The new term follows a recent sit-out by the Bahamas Educators Managerial Union, which Hanna-Martin says did not cause any issues. She expressed optimism for the school term ahead.

At R.M. Bailey Senior High School, Principal Shari Russell said over 800 students are expected and shared her focus on fostering both academic and personal excellence.

“I’m hoping that the teachers brought their A game and are basically able to keep the students in check, keep them enthused, and keep them basically interested in learning and growing and getting ready for the next level.”

Russell also encouraged parental involvement, reminding them of their crucial role even with older students.
