NASSAU, BAHAMAS – What was meant to be a 16-month project, now going on 29 months as contractors work to wrap up renovations at government house. Today officials say the project will be done in early 2023.

Months after it was slated to be completed, Government House still a construction site as officials say the pandemic has caused a delay.

In addition to the delay, officials say the cost of completing the project also went up.

Back in April 2021 officials said the restoration would cost $9.8 million. Fast forward to July 2022, a ministry of works spokesman told a local daily it will cost $17 million, excluding the cost of furniture.

Renovations started in June 2020 and were expected to be completed in October.

The restoration project saw the complete transformation of the ballroom, bedrooms, offices, and other areas.

The development of government house began as early as 1734 and was built in 1809.

Prime Minister Philip Davis says the emphasis has been on preserving and restoring the building.
