GPBA: We are Still Waiting on the Works Ministry’s Assessment

Some residents on Grand Bahama who traverse the temporary service road have been complaining about the state of that road. They say the temporary road is now damaging their cars and now they’re questioning when the Fishing Hole Causeway will be assessed and reopened to the public?

Grand Bahama Port Authority, Deputy Director and City Manager Troy McIntosh says they are aware of the concerns.

He confirmed the GBPA is waiting on the Ministry of Works and Utilities, which is responsible for the causeway to conclude their investigation and begin remedial works.

In December 2022, the GBPA began preparation exercises to close the bridge at a cost of $20,000 and an additional $5,000 was spent to grade the service road in order to provide an alternate route all an in effort to safeguard motorists.

The city manager says all stakeholders were advised that the service road which is only a temporary measure can easily deteriorate due to unfavorable weather conditions and as a result, the Ministry of Works engaging a contractor is critical.

Back in January, there were a large number of complaints by motorists that the fishing hole causeway, made out of concrete, was causing too many accidents.

McIntosh says the government is aware of their concerns and the GBPA will continue to liaise with government with respect to when work will commence on the causeway but in the interim the GBPA will once again expend resources for additional grading of the temporary service road.
