HAITI – A powerful gang leader in Haiti announced Sunday that he is lifting the blockage at a main fuel terminal that has strangled Haiti’s capital for nearly two months.

The announcement by Jimmy Cherizier, a former police officer known as Barbecue, follows claims by the Haitian government.

They have reached some success in reclaiming that terminal.

The United Nations has also targeted Cherizier with sanctions, yet it still remains unclear who actually controls the terminal as no fuel has left the area.

The gang’s blockade cuts off access to about 10 million gallons of diesel and gasoline and more than 800 thousand gallons of kerosene.
