NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A Haitian man caught traveling with almost $90,000 in undeclared cash has had the money forfeited to the Crown.

Monell Philemon, 37, of Matthew Street, pleaded guilty to failing to declare and money laundering at his arraignment before Senior Magistrate Kendra Kelly.

Philemon was arrested at the Lynden Pindling International Airport on August 13 after authorities found $89,341 hidden away in the lining of his checked luggage.

Travelers leaving the country with more than over $10,000 are required to decakre it to Bahamas Customs. It’s unknown where Philemon was headed.

Philemon also laundered the money that he was derived from multiple sources.

The magistrate ordered the funds forfeited to the Crown. Philemon will spend six months behind bars if he doesn’t pay a $2,500 fine.
