HAITI – The unveiling of Haiti’s new Prime Minister has ignited turmoil within the country’s transitional council, tasked with steering the nation amid rampant gang violence.

Four council members, in a surprising move, announced Fritz Bélizaire as Prime Minister, sparking division among council ranks.

Opposition to Bélizaire’s appointment has led to deliberations about challenging the decision or resigning from the council.

Caribbean loop news reports a person with direct knowledge of the situation said the council’s political accord had been violated by the unexpected move and that some council members are considering other choices for Prime Minister.

Despite demands for security and change, skepticism is said to persist among Haitians, wary of familiar political faces linked to past turmoil and unrest.
