“He Was an Elite World Class Artist, but an Even Better Person”

Ray Culmer – Owner, 78 West Nightclub

“Elite world-class artist, but he was an even better person.”

These words are just one of many tributes being shared as the community comes to terms with the loss of Stefan Davis, better known as Stefan Legend.

Davis was killed when a suspect being pursued in the Brownsville area of South Florida crashed into him.

Since the news broke, friends, colleagues, and members of the community have been remembering a man they knew as selfless, fun-loving, and always willing to show up for others.

Co-owner of 78 West Nightclub, Ray Culmer, reflected on the man who stood with them after a fire tore through their nightclub last year.

He says during the rebuilding process, he contacted Davis about an idea for a mural inside the club.

“It’s stuff like, ‘Hey yo, I have this idea,’ and instantly he was on board. And before the phone call was over, he was already sending me ideas of what he thought.”

Culmer says that was the type of person Davis was, someone who always put others first.

“He would always come through for you, even if it was difficult, even if it was hard, he would still make it happen. You know, even with this process right here, he was swarmed with work, but he still said, ‘You know what? It can be some late nights. I can come after they finish my work, but I come in.’”

But now, as they continue to struggle with the reality of his death, Culmer says one thing has brought them comfort, seeing just how many people have come forward to honour Davis.

“Seeing the great outpour of love from so many people from so many different backgrounds was like, Steph was really that dude. You know, he was really the legend that he said he was.”

And now he says the mural Davis brought to life will always be a part of 78 West.

It will live on for as long as the business remains open, ensuring that Stef Legend will always have a piece of his legacy inside the place he once supported.
