TURKS & CAICOS – Weeks after the Turks and Caicos Islands confirmed a case of cholera, the Pan American Health Organisation says it’s possible for a case to pop up in The Bahamas.

PAHO and W.H.O. representative to The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos Dr. Eldonna Boisson says if that happens she’s hopeful its quickly detected and quarantined.

Cholera is an acute diarrheal illness caused by an infection of the intestine with vibrio cholerae bacteria.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control says people can get sick when food or water contaminated with cholera bacteria is swallowed.

Meanwhile Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Phillip Swann says they’re prepared if something happens.
