NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Last week, a microburst in Eastern New Providence caused extensive damage to homes and property, costing thousands of dollars – and in many of the cases it was trees that caused most of the damage.

So what’s the lesson to be learned here?

Landscaper Ricardo Basile tells us untrimmed trees present a real danger with any wild weather.

Ricardo Basile – Owner, Clean Start Landscaping and Maintenance

“It [causes] extensive damage to your home and to the power lines, it could damage your neighbor house, it can damage your vehicles, [and] it could be a danger to your pets or people nearby. So it’s best to keep your house and your trees trimmed…so if you see a big branch hanging over your house or covering your driveway, it’s best to get that done quick as soon as possible,” he said.

This is exactly what we saw in the area most damaged by the microburst.

The night of the storm, trees blocked roads, making it difficult to pass.

Branches were intertwined with down power-lines, trees uprooted sidewalk- others fell on homes, gates, and even cars.

“I [have] a client [that] had a coconut tree they didn’t…cut on time, it fell right through the house, and it cost them roof, furniture, a lot of damages. [However] if they had just trimmed it when they [were] supposed to do it, it wouldn’t have cause none of that, Baslie said.

While they enhance our surroundings, Basile is encouraging the government to continue to monitor the number of untrimmed trees along public roadways.

“A better job needs to be done with that because that’s not safe, – a lot of those trees could fall at any given time. Any given time you could be driving…it can cause an accidental death…,” Baslie said.
