NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Abaco shantytown residents have less than 30 days to move out, according to Immigration Minister Keith Bell, as more than 200 people have already been served eviction notices.

The deadline comes days after it was revealed that 260 evection notices were served to homes in a shantytown off S.C. Bootle Highway in Abaco.

In a statement Tuesday, the Unregulated Communities Action Task Force revealed the evictions were served, adding the atmosphere for the operation was peaceful, calm and without incident.

Last month, Prime Minister Philip Davis put residents of shantytowns across The Bahamas on notice that they will be required to find alternative housing, but gave no timeline on when demolition would begin.

Works and Utilities Minister Alfred Sears recently announced cabinet reconvened a shantytown task force.

In 2018, the Shantytown Action Task Force was formed but a court injunction halted its work.

Bell reiterated that more than just illegal immigrants are in shantytowns.
