Inside UB: UB North Expanding For the Future

GRAND BAHAMA, BAHAMAS – Students at the University of The Bahamas’ Northern Campus are not only experiencing a new campus life, but they’re finding opportunities that align with their goals.

For student ambassador Jayden Pinder, that means leadership opportunities, and for Quinesha Newman, it’s the convenience of having support systems close at hand.

Together, their experiences show how UB North is creating an environment where success feels within reach.

“I believe that what they’re doing here, the UB North, they’re really nurturing the students into becoming the leaders of the future, you know, and just because we’re surrounded by our fellow Bahamians, it really allows us to forge those bonds needed to make this country a better place.”

“Being able to be around other people that you know, for sure, its helped me a lot, because its a community here, it’s very family oriented, and so being able to be around persons that you know, or you’re able to make connections with, it gives you that comfort that if you need help with something, you’re able to reach out…”

Meanwhile, UB North Dean of Faculty Veronica Ferguson explains how partnerships with industry and the wider community are helping students prepare for life after graduation, and enter the workforce career-ready.

“In actuality, they are here to graduate and be market ready. And we are doing that as well. We have a number of programs where we are working with the marine persons in the community. Blue Action, Lab, Grand Bahama Port Authority. We have those partnerships with them, as well as even the business and the corporate community…”

Beyond the labs and round-the-clock computer access already in place, UB North is looking ahead to what’s next.

Vice President Denise Barnes says expansion plans are already underway, with the goal of making higher education more accessible to students across Grand Bahama.

“We are gonna have a larger campus where the students can enjoy student life here in downtown Grand Bahama. The other thing is, is that we want to have those residences in place, so we want to appeal to everyone, and not only in Grand Bahama or Northern Bahamas, there may be some programs that you be know of, is gonna be offering, that students from New Providence can come and actually reside in Grand Bahama and take those classes here.”

“The other thing we want to do, of course, is get to the point where the programs, especially the ones that both parents and students have voiced an interest in, are actually fully completed here in Grand Bahama. There’s no need to really leave home.”
