REGIONAL – Italy is putting the spotlight on Latin America and the Caribbean, calling the region a priority for its foreign policy.

Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani opened the Italy–Latin America and Caribbean Conference in Rome on Tuesday, declaring that Italy wants to serve as the region’s “voice before European institutions.”

Tajani highlighted progress on a trade deal with Mercosur and pointed to growth opportunities in agriculture, security, and culture.

He says the goal is to boost trade to 700 billion dollars by 2027, while strengthening Italy’s role as an ambassador for the region in Europe, a position supported by strong Italian communities across Latin America.
