NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The saying taking bread out of a man’s mouth also applies to life on the high seas. Fishermen are speaking out against the age-old problem of illegal poaching in Bahamian waters.

Captain Mccartney from Eleuthera says it is hard as poachers strip the waters of premium seafood.

Many of these poachers, McCartney says, operate around the southern islands.

It has been well documented that poachers consist of different nationalities, including Dominicans with defense force officers often encountering them in Bahamian waters.

While some fishermen are against illegal poaching, they acknowledge that foreigners employed on Bahamian-owned vessels contribute to the industry.

The Royal Bahamas Defence Force has beefed up its efforts in recent years, patrolling waters to safeguard against poaching.

Despite this, fishermen’s cries remain the same.
