Jamaica to Enact Policies to Support Contractors in Executing Large Projects

JAMAICA – Jamaica’s prime minister says his government is moving to create a stronger local “contractor class” to deliver large-scale infrastructure projects and drive economic growth.

Prime Minister Andrew Holness says policies are being considered to help local contractors build capacity so they can handle projects at a much bigger scale.

Jamaica Information Services recently reported that many local firms are currently equipped to build about 1,000 homes at a time, but government growth targets require developers capable of delivering up to 10,000 units.

Holness also acknowledged that public-sector red tape is slowing project implementation, despite a significantly expanded capital budget.

He pointed to lengthy approval and procurement processes, saying safeguards meant to protect the public often delay public benefit.

The prime minister says while major projects are being delivered, they are happening too slowly, and the pace must increase.
