JJ, New York Liberty Get Ready For The Playoffs

NEW YORK – Jonquel Jones and the New York Liberty are entering the playoffs as the heavy favorite, securing the 5th overall seed in the WNBA with a 27-17 record, good for 2nd place in the Eastern Conference. They’ll face Jones’ former team, the 11th-seeded Connecticut Sun, who finished 11-23.

Jones contributed 13 points and 8 rebounds per game this season, despite missing nine games with an ankle injury. Leading the Liberty in scoring was former MVP Breanna Stewart, who averaged 18 points and 6.5 rebounds per game. Sharpshooter Sabrina Ionescu, back from injury, also averaged 18 points and nearly 6 assists per game.

Point guard Natasha Cloud, known for her defense, averaged 10 points and 5 assists, while backup center Emma Meesseman and Leonie Fiebich round out the roster. The Sun will counter with veteran center Tina Charles, who averaged 16 points, and guard Marina Mabry, contributing 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 4 assists. The Sun will be looking to pull off an upset against the defending Eastern Conference champs.

Bahamians in MLB Action

Jazz Chisholm and the New York Yankees secured a key division win, beating the Boston Red Sox 4-1. Chisholm went 2-4 with two singles and stole his 30th base of the season. Aaron Judge hit his 47th home run, ranking 5th all-time in Yankees history. Luis Gil pitched six scoreless innings, giving the Yankees a one-game lead over Boston in the Wild Card race.

Meanwhile, Antoan Richardson’s New York Mets fell 7-3 to the Texas Rangers, with catcher Francisco Alvarez hitting a solo home run. In the minors, Rangers prospect Sebastian Walcott went 2-5 with two singles and scored twice to lead the Frisco RoughRiders to a 12-7 win over the Northwest Arkansas Naturals. Kristian Robinson went 1-5 for the Reno Aces in their 10-3 loss to the Las Vegas Aviators.
