UNITED STATES – Jonquel Jones posted another double-double, but the New York Liberty dropped game one of the WNBA semi-finals to the Atlanta Dream 92-82.
Jones finished with a double-double as New York held a three-point lead at halftime, but Atlanta exploded for 32 points in the third quarter to take control.
The Dream forced 21 Liberty turnovers and turned those mistakes into 32 points, with Jordin Canada scoring 20 of her 25 points in the second half.
The loss continues a tough recent stretch against Atlanta for New York.
The Dream won the regular-season series 2-1, including back-to-back wins over the Liberty to close the regular season.
New York’s only win came back in June, a 104-90 victory in Atlanta.
Now, the Liberty will look to even the best-of-five series in game two, Wednesday night in Atlanta.
Major Makes Run to MEAC Fall Final
Michael Major Jr. made a deep run at the MEAC Fall Tennis Invitational, finishing as the men’s singles runner-up in Cary, North Carolina.
Major opened the tournament with a straight-set win before pulling off the tournament’s biggest upset in the quarterfinals.
The Howard University standout defeated top-seeded Iliyas Maratuly of South Carolina State 7-5, 5-7, 6-4.
Major then beat third-seed Szymon Malecki of Norfolk State 7-5, 6-4 to advance to the final.
There, second-seeded Andrii Borodatiuk of South Carolina state defeated Major 6-1, 2-6, 6-1 to claim the men’s singles title.
Despite the loss in the final, Major’s run included two wins over seeded opponents to him at the center of one of the tournament’s biggest stories.
Coaches Praise Levarity’s Impact
Aaron Levarity is already making his presence felt in France’s top basketball league.
The Bahamian forward had 15 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists and 2 steals as Chorale Roanne beat Nanterre 93-83 in the Betclic Elite.
Levarity shot 5-7 from the field and 5-5 from the free throw line, as Roanne improved to 2-0.
His impact also caught the attention of Head Coach T.J. Parker, who praised Levarity’s work around the paint and his all-around effort.
Parker said Levarity was “everywhere,” adding that he plays with heart and is the type of player who does the dirty work.
Parker also revealed that Levarity is consistently the first player in the gym, saying he was not surprised by the performance.
Roanne is now preparing for its next game Tuesday against Antibes in the French Cup.
Jones Perfect From the Field in Anadolu Win
Kai Jones posted a double-double as Anadolu Efes beat Pizzabulls Bordo Bandirma 85-79 in Turkey.
The Bahamian big man had 11 points, 10 rebounds and two blocks, while going a perfect 5-5 from the field.
Efes held off a late comeback, with Bandirma cutting the lead to two in the final 30 seconds before Efes closed out the win.
The victory moves Anadolu Efes to 2-0 to start the Turkish Super League season.
