UNITED STATES – The New York Liberty are one win away from advancing to the second round of the WNBA playoffs after taking Game One of their first-round series 91-75 over the Minnesota Lynx on Sunday.

Jonquel Jones finished with eight points, four rebounds, two assists, a steal and a block in the victory, as New York turned a four-point halftime deficit into a 16-point win.

The Liberty have also had the Lynx’s number this season, winning two of their three regular-season meetings, including a 93-81 road win just nine days before the playoffs began.

Jones was a big part of that success, averaging 15.7 points and 12.3 rebounds in the three regular-season matchups.

Now New York returns home for Game Two Tuesday night at Barclays Center with a chance to eliminate Minnesota and advance to the second round, while a Lynx win would force a decisive Game Three back in Minneapolis Thursday.

NCAA Football

HBCU football is returning to The Bahamas this fall as the YES HBCU Bahamas Classic comes to Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium on Saturday, November 7.

Morehouse College and Kentucky State University will meet in the inaugural YES HBCU Bahamas Classic, with kickoff set for 1 p.m.

Both programs are members of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference in NCAA Division II, with the matchup marking the first international football trip for Morehouse and the first time Kentucky State will play in The Bahamas.

The Classic will also mark just the second HBCU football game to be played in Nassau, following the 2014 HBCUX Classic at Thomas A. Robinson Stadium between Texas Southern and Central State. Texas Southern won that game 30-16.

The weekend is expected to feature more than just the football game, with events planned for alumni, fans and visitors around the Classic.

The event is being produced by Young Entrepreneurz Solutions, or YES, which hosted its first HBCU football classic in the Caribbean last year in St. Croix.

With Morehouse and Kentucky State bringing their programs and alumni bases to The Bahamas, organizers are looking to turn the November 7 matchup into a weekend celebration of HBCU culture, football and The Bahamas.

UB Mingoes Soccer

It was raining goals in Coral Springs, Florida, on Saturday as the University of The Bahamas Mingoes men’s soccer team picked up a 5-3 win over Trinity College of Florida to open its international tour.

Philip Pilgrim and Ronaldo Green both scored twice for UB, while Clerdjevensky Clerjuste added a goal as the Mingoes held off a second-half comeback from Trinity.

Pilgrim opened the scoring in the 14th minute, before Trinity equalized four minutes later.

Green’s free kick in the 35th minute found Clerjuste, who headed the ball past the goalkeeper to give UB a 2-1 lead at the half.

Pilgrim added his second goal in the 53rd minute to put UB up 3-1, but Trinity responded with goals in the 63rd and 70th minutes to tie the match.

Green then converted two penalty kicks in the 78th and 82nd minutes to complete his two-goal performance and give UB the 5-3 victory.

Head coach Alex Thompson said the final score did not tell the entire story, acknowledging that his team made the match more difficult than it needed to be.

The win caps an unbeaten opening to UB’s international tour, after the Mingoes played to a 2-2 draw against Millennia Atlantic University on Thursday.

UB now prepares for back-to-back matchups against Atlantis University, with the first meeting set for Thursday, October 1, followed by another matchup Friday, October 2, at Kendall Soccer Park in Miami.
