GRAND BAHAMA – Over in Grand Bahama, the march was pretty much the same mix of workers and political support, as the activities mirrored those of celebrations here in Nassau.

The major trade unions showed strong representation in Grand Bahama during Friday’s Labour Day march.

Unions like the Bahamas Union of Teachers were out in numbers, celebrating but also looking to continue the fight, as explained by B.U.T. Area Vice President John Ingraham.

The church, always present in national observances and celebrations, stood in the midst of today’s march as well.

And with only weeks since the last general election, the political scene was still active. Politics and the labour movement have always shared a close relationship in the Bahamian context.

But it was Foreign Affairs and Immigration Minister Fred Mitchell who perhaps summed it up best when he provided some historical context.
