NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The corruption trial of embattled Long Island Opposition Member of Parliament Adrian Gibson could begin on Thursday if the Court of Appeal does not grant a stay.

Justice Cheryl Grant-Thompson on Monday refused to stop Gibson’s trial after she rejected arguments that he could not have a fair trial.

His lawyer, Murrio Ducille, had argued that Gibson would be prejudiced in his defense if his former fiancee, Alexandria Mackey, and the prosecution’s key witness testified virtually.

Ducille also argued that the prosecution had failed to fully disclose its case.

However, Grant-Thompson found that the arguments were misconceived. As a result, she said the trial should continue and scheduled jury selection for Thursday.

However, Ducille informed the judge that he planned to appeal her decision and would seek a stay of the trial until the appeal is heard.

Before Grant-Thompson ruled on the application for Mackey to testify by video link, Acting DPP Cordell Frazier said that Mackey was prepared to testify in person and that steps were being taken to ensure her safety.

Mackey had claimed that she was afraid to testify in person after she was allegedly attacked by Gibson in December 2021.
