Man Jailed For Breaking Into Church Rectory

NASSAU, BAHAMAS – A 51-year-old man who stole laundry supplies during a break-in at the rectory of St. Mary The Virgin Anglican Church has been jailed for two-and-a-half years.

Dennis Darville pleaded guilty to house breaking and stealing at his arraignment before Acting Chief Magistrate Roberto Reckley.

Darville stole a six-gallon Shop-Vac vacuum cleaner and cleaning supplies valued at $219.38 during the August 1 break-in.

Priest Colin Humes identified Darville as the culprit after checking surveillance footage.

Darville sometimes cleaned the yard and came to the priest’s home daily for meals.

The court heard that Humes confronted Darville about the theft when he saw him walking along Augusta Street.

Darville initially denied that he was responsible, but he admitted his misdeeds when shown the security footage.

As a result, the priest detained Darville until the police arrived.

Police only recovered the stolen vacuum cleaner as Darville claimed that someone had removed the cleaning supplies from where he had stashed them.
