NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Around the world, March 8 is observed as International Women’s Day.

Here at Our News we decided to take a different approach to the stories we do to highlight the day; this year,  we’re focusing on women in diplomacy.

And for the first time ever, The Bahamas has the most women serving in diplomatic posts per capita in the region.

All of the women I spoke to are the first in their respective countries. First up, Dr. E. Monica Davis, the Consul General in Trinidad & Tobago.

And being honored also means you’re empowered.

“It’s a great fact that we have a growing population of women in diplomacy and this of course will empower women because women are known to be nurturers and peacemakers and so on,” Dr. Davis said.

Dr. Davis gave this bit of advice for women who may be considering a career in foreign affairs.

“Most things are indeed possible once you’re willing to put in the required element of work and patience and those kinds of things and to show them that we can indeed make a difference and by making a difference for our country through what we can do that will help them,” she said.

And this is not Davis’ first rodeo; she’s being serving in an honorary role for 20 years. She was recently confirmed as consul general back on February 1st.

Davis, who’s also an educator says she stands on the shoulders of those who have come before her.
