MEXICO – Gunmen killed the female Mayor of Cotija, Mexico, just hours after Claudia Sheinbaum was elected as the country’s first female President.

Yolanda Sánchez, who had governed since September 2021, was ambushed and shot 19 times in Michoacán.

No arrests have been made, but it is believed that an organized crime group was responsible.

Sánchez had previously received death threats and survived a kidnapping by armed men in 2023. Her murder follows widespread violence against politicians, with over 20 candidates killed since September.
