NASSAU , BAHAMAS – As King Charles the Third wrapped up his three-day visit to The Bahamas, Wednesday afternoon’s garden reception at Government House brought together dignitaries, diplomats and members of the public.

Dame Cynthia Pratt – Governor General

“On behalf of the government and the people of The Bahamas, it is my distinct honor and profound privilege to extend this special welcome to you, sir. Your return marks a truly historic milestone.”

Governor General Dame Cynthia Pratt delivered a welcome address at a garden reception held at Government House on Wednesday afternoon.

It was a chance to welcome the King, reflect on a historic visit and look ahead at what it could mean for The Bahamas and the wider Caribbean.

Dignitaries, diplomats and other distinguished guests attended the event, where they were entertained by the Royal Bahamas Police Force Pop Band.

The reception was one of several events during the King’s three-day visit, his first to The Bahamas as reigning monarch.

For Prime Minister Philip Davis, the visit was an opportunity to show the world what The Bahamas has to offer.

“His presence here has truly exposed The Bahamas to the world. Who we are, our culture, our warmth.”

For Secretary to the Governor General Jack Thompson, the visit was also a personal moment he won’t soon forget.

Thompson helped with the organization of the royal visit, but he also had a special connection to the Royal Family.

He recalled meeting Queen Elizabeth the Second when he was a teacher.

Now, years later, he had the opportunity to welcome her son in his official capacity.

“It was just awesome, simply an awesome experience.”

The significance of the visit extends beyond The Bahamas.

Anya Williams, Deputy Governor of the Turks and Caicos Islands, says the King’s visit comes at an important time, as Caribbean nations continue to reflect on their history with Britain and what that relationship should look like in the future.

Anya Williams – Deputy Governor, Turks and Caicos Islands

“I believe it comes at a critical time when there’s lots of discussions about the history as it relates to the relationship between the United Kingdom and the Caribbean, but more so of what the future relationship is going to be.”
