Mother: “I Could’ve Lost My Baby, I Love My Baby So Much”

NASSAU , BAHAMAS – A three-year-old girl is recovering after a vicious dog attack, and her mother is recalling the terrifying moment she fought to save her child, and now she’s appealing for help.

A mother is left distraught as she’s still trying to come to grips with the thought that she could have lost her baby girl.

“If I wasn’t minutes away from my baby, I would’ve lost my baby, and I love my baby so much.”

Three-year-old Skye Lightbourne was viciously attacked September 9 while on her way to school.

Her mother, Benticka, says a neighbour called out to her as the dog ran through a gate, knocking Skye to the ground.

She says her daughter underwent surgery for injuries to her temple, forehead, and the back of her head, and may now need facial reconstructive surgery.

Her mother recalls the moment she fought to free her child.

“Only God knows how he gave me strength. I couldn’t think. I had to actually, like I say, take my hand and put it in his mouth to pry his mouth open.”

“Trust me, I can’t sleep because every night I’m looking at my baby, touching up my baby, thinking, you know, to make sure she’s still here with me.”

Minister of Agriculture Jomo Campbell was also asked about the attack after recently launching the government’s Mission Pawsible initiative.

He’s urging the dog’s owner to turn himself in.

“We know who the owner is. I’ve been making this appeal to the owner at this time. Please present yourself to the nearest station to your residence, which would be the Wolf Road Police Station, so we can discuss the way forward on this matter.”

Campbell confirmed the dog is a Belgian Malinois mixed with a German Shepherd, which he says appeared to be trained.

As Skye continues to recover, her mother says she has been unable to work and is now asking the public for help.

“I’m self-employed, but now I can’t do nothing. I don’t even have a dollar. I don’t know where the next dollar gonna come from to feed my children, not even to feed her, to make sure she gets the things she needs.”
