NASSAU, BAHAMAS – The Davis administration is proposing the construction of a new police headquarters at the same East Street location.

Prime Minister Philip Davis shared the plan in his budget communication on Wednesday. Today, National Security Minister Wayne Munroe said it’s another step in beefing up national security.

Wayne Munroe – Minister, National Security
“It will be a multi-story building that will have the administrative and other offices of the Royal Bahamas Police Force. If you go in their current headquarters, you will see a nice old building, but not necessarily fit for purpose at this time.”

Munroe noted that the new facility will be placed west of the current compound.

The new plans also include the replacement of the police fire shed, which Munroe says will be upgraded to accommodate new fire equipment.

“It is also proposed to replace the existing [fire shed]. It will have to be built to accommodate the new fire equipment that is also provided for in the budget, and it will include sleeping spaces for the fire officers who are actually there around the clock. That site is also proposed for the new forensic lab further west along the property, but that’s not settled as the headquarters and the fire shed.”

Munroe emphasized that the new structure will allow for more modern operations, adding that the current facility is outdated.

Additionally, he shared that a recent survey of police stations across the island revealed that more attention needs to be placed on the aging structures.

“I haven’t seen the costing on it. I spoke with the persons, and it’s hoping that we can be through with the design phases by September, and the multi-story building, and perhaps already moving to replace the fire shed by then.”
