NASSAU, BAHAMAS – National Security Minister Wayne Munroe is weighing in following a deadly altercation outside a popular nightclub on Baillou Hill Road that left one man dead and three others injured, including a suspect who was grazed by a bullet fired from an off-duty officer’s weapon.

The incident, which unfolded early Wednesday morning, has sparked widespread reaction online after a video of the confrontation went viral.

Police say the dispute began inside the Higher Level Bar, where three men, aged 21, 23, and 28, were stabbed during a fight. One of them, 23-year-old corrections officer Ashtino Johnson, later died in hospital.

Outside the bar, officers say the stabbing suspect confronted an off-duty police officer, leading to a struggle during which the officer’s gun was discharged, grazing the suspect in the head.

Minister Munroe condemned the violence, emphasizing that the matter is now under police investigation.

“Any aspect of criminal behaviour is wrong,” he said. “The police will investigate what happened, determine the motivation, and put the matter before the court.”

Munroe also noted that law enforcement officers are not immune to the same pressures that affect the wider public.

“We recruit from the population,” he added. “Law enforcement officers face the same challenges as everyone else and are subject to the same things.”

Addressing questions about the officer’s use of his firearm, Munroe said the issue lies in determining whether it was appropriate to draw the weapon to gain compliance.

Police investigations into the deadly altercation are ongoing.
