NASSAU, BAHAMAS – Rawson Square came alive Monday night as hundreds gathered for the official lighting of the National Christmas Tree and an electrifying preview of the Junkanoo groups set to hit Bay Street this Boxing Day and New Year’s Day.

As the crowd counted down from five, the tree lit up in a burst of color, drawing cheers from a packed Bay Street. The night was filled with music, dance and performances from young talent across the country, including school groups and local dance academies.

Youth, Sports and Culture Minister Mario Bowleg told the crowd that Christmas serves as a reminder of the good within all of us and calls on everyone to show kindness, open their hearts, and look out for one another.

The excitement continued as the National Junkanoo Committee hosted a practice rush-out for the A-category groups. Leading the charge were the two-time defending champions, the Saxon Superstars, followed by the Genesis Warhawks and One Family Warriors. The Way Forward Valley Boys were next, a group the minister previously recognized as the Valley Boys entity registered for this year’s parade.

Roots took the route shortly after, followed by the world-famous Valley Boys, led by Brian Adderley, who has reportedly received seed funding and is expected to participate in this year’s parade. Prodigal Sons and Music Makers rounded out the rush-out.

Cultural Director Dereka Delevaux highlighted the importance of events like these, saying they help young people understand what anchors Bahamian identity and give them something to look forward to and call their own, especially during the Christmas season.
