NASSAU, BAHAMAS – National Security Minister Wayne Munroe is holding firm tonight, insisting there has never been any report confirming that a bag of passports was found on a Bahamasair flight to Haiti.
His comments follow a Tribune article this week detailing how a former flight attendant was briefly detained and questioned by financial crime officers, and later fire, after $106,000 was allegedly seized by Haitian authorities following a March 1 flight to Cap-Haïtien.
The ex-employee claims he unknowingly carried a small bag containing one passport, clothing, and a pair of heels for a colleague, calling it a routine practice among crew. But Munroe says the investigation centered solely on cash, not passports.
According to the Tribune report, the former flight attendant also stated he was questioned specifically about “the $100,000” and never about passports, further supporting Munroe’s position.
Munroe added that flight crew members should know better than to transport valuables without proper checks, stressing the clear difference between everyday items and large undeclared sums of money.
He also pushed back on the credibility of the ex-employee’s account, noting that admitting to carrying a package without knowing its contents raises serious questions. Munroe argued that such carelessness could just as easily involve drugs, explosives, or other illegal items, emphasizing the need for discernment and responsibility.
