NASSAU, BAHAMAS – After gifting an Englerston family with a new home following a tragic fire that destroyed their 25-year-old house, Housing Minister Keith Bell says the Ministry’s next gesture of gratitude will be in Nassau Village.

It was in Nassau Village where a woman’s home was accidentally demolished in April 2025, during a government initiative targeting abandoned buildings.

Bell says the Ministry is also expanding its housing efforts to the family islands, with those communities set to benefit from upcoming projects as well.

In New Providence, the Ministry will be returning to Renaissance Subdivision to begin phases three and four.

Bell also provided an update on Vispen Meadows, where he says 40 homes have already been constructed.

However, he says that’s not all, more new housing developments are on the horizon.

“We are about to get a certificate of environmental clearing and prior for three estates at Adastra. We’re looking to construct 160 homes in that subdivision. And so we are looking at a number of areas. We have just today received the conveyance from the Catholic archdiocese for property off Allen drive.”

The Ministry will also be moving into the eastern district, with plans for a new subdivision in Fox Hill.

Bell says the ministry is also eyeing property in Sea Breeze for future housing development.

As the government continues its efforts to address derelict, abandoned and vacant properties in inner-city communities, Bell says about 100 properties have so far been acquired through compulsory acquisition.

He says one family is expected to receive the keys to a new home within the next two to three weeks, one of several homes the ministry plans to develop on those acquired properties.

For those still waiting on their housing applications, Bell says the Ministry is working overtime to get through the backlog.

“We’re looking at the backlog. We’re eating at the backlog at the same time dealing with current applications. So I ask anyone who has applications who have applied for a number of years to just be patient with us.”

For Bahamians who dream of owning a home, the housing minister says that dream is within reach.

He says the ministry has a number of options available, including rent-to-own options, and is encouraging Bahamians to apply through the Ministry of Housing’s website to learn more about what’s available.
